A day of fun at Hersheypark turned to heartbreak on July 24 when 9-year-old Sophia Subedi of Harrisburg tragically drowned in the park’s wave pool. Officials confirmed her passing was the result of accidental drowning, with no underlying medical conditions involved.
Sophia, a third-grader in the Central Dauphin School District, had recently moved to Harrisburg with her family. She was remembered by teachers, classmates, and friends for her bright smile, kind spirit, and curiosity. She dreamed of one day becoming a teacher herself.
The Bhutanese Community of Harrisburg shared the news with deep sorrow, calling Sophia’s passing a loss that touched the entire community.According to Hersheypark officials, ten lifeguards were on duty at the wave pool, and emergency personnel responded immediately.
The park is fully cooperating with authorities while also conducting its own internal safety review. To support the Subedi family, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help with funeral and memorial expenses. A service celebrating Sophia’s life will be held this week at Jesse H. Geigle Funeral Home in Harrisburg.
