A Funeral, a Lie, and a Trail of Gasoline

Posted on August 8, 2025August 8, 2025 By author author No Comments on A Funeral, a Lie, and a Trail of Gasoline

When my husband, Jordan, told me he was going to a childhood friend’s funeral, I didn’t question it. But when I decided to visit our country house later that day, I found his car parked near the shed—and him behind it, pouring gasoline on a pile of photographs. The flames erupted just as I screamed his name. What I saw in the fire changed everything: pictures of Jordan with another woman in a wedding dress, holding a child who looked just like him. It wasn’t a funeral he was coming from. It was a secret life he was trying to burn away.

We’d been married 21 years. Raised two kids. Built a home filled with memories. I never imagined the man I shared all that with had another family—one he kept hidden for nine years. Her name was Camille, and their son was Tommy. Both had died in a car crash two weeks earlier. Grief-stricken and desperate, Jordan had returned to erase every trace of the life I never knew he had.

He confessed everything, sobbing as he sat on a fallen log like the weight of the truth finally broke him. I listened in stunned silence, my heart in pieces. I couldn’t understand how he managed to live two lives so seamlessly—how many times he lied about business trips or visits to his “brother.” And worst of all, he said he loved both of us. That he never meant to lose either family. But one was already gone. And now, he was begging not to lose the other.

We drove home separately. The silence between us louder than ever. I haven’t decided what comes next. Some days I imagine forgiving him. Others, I can’t bear to look at him without seeing the ashes of his betrayal. Maybe I’ll find a way forward. Maybe not. But I know this: I deserve to be someone’s only choice—not their secret, not their second life. And for once, I’m choosing myself.
