My husband, James, had taken a promotion six months earlier that kept him in another city half the week. Our calls dwindled. I was left to manage our daughter, Lily, and the household on my own.Then his mother, Carol, began visiting more often — bringing lasagna, folding laundry, helping with Lily. I thought she was just being kind.Until that afternoon.
“Grandma took your perfume yesterday,” Lily said while drawing at the kitchen table. Carol choked on her tea. I asked her to open her purse. She resisted — then finally did.Inside were my anniversary necklace, engagement earrings, perfume bottles… and a note in James’s handwriting:

Carol broke down. She admitted James had told her I’d be emotional and manipulative, and asked her to erase his presence from my life slowly. She suspected he was leaving me for someone at his new office.“I was wrong to help him,” she said, through tears. “But I want to make it right.”That night, we confronted James together. I laid out the stolen items on the table. He showed no remorse.
Then Carol stepped forward.“She owns those gifts,” she said sharply. “And if you don’t handle this divorce respectfully, I’ll make sure the court knows everything.”James stormed out.Carol turned to me, ashamed but resolute. “You already have a lawyer,” she said quietly. “Let’s get your life back.”
